C/G G C C A7 D Oh, when I was a lad, Old Shep was a pup G7 C G7 Over hills and meadows we'd stray C A7 D Just a boy and his dog, we were both full of fun G7 C C7 We grew up together that way F F7 C I remember the time at the old swimming hole C A13 D7 G7 When I would have drowned beyond doubt C A7 D Old Shep was right there, to the rescue he came G7 C He jumped in and helped pull me out C A7 D9 D7 As the years fast did roll, Old Shep he grew old G7 C G7 His eyes were fast growing dim C A7 D And one day the doctor looked at me and said G7 C C7 I can do no more for him Jim F F7 C With hands that were trembling, I picked up my gun C A7 D7 G7 And aimed it at Shep's faithful head C A7 D9 D7 But I just couldn't do it, I wanted to run G7 C I wished they would shoot me instead. C A7 D He came to my side and looked up at me G7 C G7 He laid his poor head on my knee C A7 D I stroked the best friend a man ever had G7 C C7 I cried 'til I scarcely could see F F7 C Old Shep, he has gone where the good doggies go C A7 D7 G7 No more with Old Shep will I roam C A7 D9 D7 But if dogs have a heaven, there's one thing I know G7 C Old Shep has a wonderful home.
